Geoengineering and Aviation Oversight in Florida
The Aviation Office of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is dedicated to ensuring transparency, safety, and environmental responsibility in our skies. In response to growing public interest and advances in climate technologies, FDOT has implemented new oversight measures for geoengineering and weather-modification activities in Florida's airspace.
What is Geoengineering?
Geoengineering refers to deliberate techniques that aim to influence atmospheric conditions—such as cloud seeding or aerosol dispersion—to modify weather or address climate change. While many of these technologies are still in the research or experimental phase, FDOT recognizes the importance of monitoring any such activities that may involve aviation platforms. Learn more.
Florida's Actions Against Geoengineering
FDOT and state agencies are actively protecting the airspace from unauthorized geoengineering and weather modification activities.
- Geoengineering is banned under Florida law.
- Violators face felony charges and fines up to $100,000.
- Aircraft operators may be fined up to $5,000 per violation.
- All public-use airports must report aircraft with weather modification equipment starting October 1, 2025.
These actions are part of a broader initiative to protect Florida's airspace and ensure that any atmospheric interventions are subject to proper oversight and environmental review.
